Border externalisation in egypt

Conversation with Nour Khalil

Border Externalisation in Egypt The Refugees Platform Egypt is an independent organization working to defend human rights, focusing on supporting and advocating for the rights of people on the move.

Nour Khalil works for RPEGY and joins us in this episode to discuss the situation at Egypt's borders to Sudan and Gaza, racism and repression of political activism in the country, and the neocolonial border externalisation policies of the EU. The counter revolutionary government in Egypt has been repressing any form of mobilisations and solidarity, in particular through enforced disappearances and unlawful detention.

Alaa Abd El Fattah, for example, should have been released on 29 September 2024, after five years behind bars which correspond to the already unjust sentence. Now, his mother Leila Soueif has begun a hunger strike to protest his ongoing imprisonment by the Egyptian authorities and has pleaded to end the hunger strike only when Alaa is released.

There are many other cases of imprisoned activists, and people on the move are also unlawfully detained after they have survived pushbacks, or even kidnapped for ransom after fleeing the war in Sudan. While the Egyptian government is cracking down on resistance coming from within the country against its economic policies, border regime and human rights violations, it is also doing the dirty work of EUrope by brutally cracking down on, disappearing and stealing from people on the move.
